The Paris Exposition of 1889
The Exposition Universelle of 1889 in Paris was one of the most influential world’s fairs of the 19th century. Celebrating the centennial of the French Revolution, it drew millions of visitors from across the globe and showcased the highest achievements in art, industry, science, and agriculture. The event symbolized international prestige—most famously marked by the debut of the Eiffel Tower—and set a global standard for excellence.
Cresta Blanca: First Major International Award for California Wine
Cresta Blanca’s 1884 dry white, called a Sauterne and crafted primarily from Sauvignon Blanc, won the Grand Prix at the 1889 Paris Exposition. It was the first California wine ever to achieve such distinction.
It challenged long-held assumptions about where truly great wine could come from. In an era when French wine defined quality and authority, this recognition signaled that California terroir and craftsmanship could stand shoulder to shoulder with the world’s best.
Cresta Blanca’s success at the 1889 Paris Exposition was more than a medal—it was a turning point. It marked one of the first moments when American wine gained serious international credibility, helping pave the way for California wine’s entry onto the world stage.
The Wine Goddess
The Cresta Blanca Wine Goddess logo is inspired by the carved face of a commemorative barrel commissioned to celebrate the Grand Prix win at the 1889 Paris Expo.
The Wine Goddess embodies the same spirit of abundance and optimism of the era. It is also this spirit that fuels Cresta Blanca’s exploration in the world of wine today.
